Description

In this FREE engaging workshop, for the beginner to the more savvy, Dr. David White of Once Upon a Watershed will lead you through the wonders of composting!  You will learn how composting connects you more deeply with nature and our soil, why composting is a nature-based solution for climate change, and how it's both a cool and mindful way to handle our waste.  In this class you can expect to get a little dirty, by practicing hands-on sieve composting, bug hunting, and compost pile turning.  All ages are welcome for this free event. Come and connect with your local community while you learn and get inspired by Dr. David White!


DATE- June 27, 2026

TIME - 10am - 11am

WHERE- The City of Ojai Demonstration Garden, 415 S. Ventura Street, Ojai

WHAT TO BRING- Bring gloves and wear clothes and shoes you would like to get inoculated with beneficial soil biology.  Optional -water bottle, sunscreen, hat.  Also, optional - bring food scraps from home that you'd like to compost!

NOTE- All registrants must provide a signed Volunteer Agreement form to attend the event/workshop.  Please print out the City of Ojai Volunteer AgreementVolunteers younger than 18 years of age must provide a parent or legal guardian’s signature.  Please fill out the form and turn it in on the day of the event.

About your instructor:

Born and raised in Scotland, David studied Biological Sciences at Edinburgh University and graduated with a Ph.D. in Cell Biology.  After conducting research at Cornell Medical school and the University of Idaho, he moved to Ojai to work in nature-based education and organic land management.   He currently consults on soil health and regenerative techniques.  He has worked with numerous environmental groups, including the Keep the Sespe Wild Committee, Food for Thought Ojai, White Buffalo Land Trust, the Captain Planet Foundation, and the Ojai Valley Green Coalition.  David co-founded the Center for Regenerative Agriculture in 2002 and worked as its Executive Director for twenty years.  Since 2010 David has directed the Once Upon a Watershed education program which currently serves 23 public schools.  In 2020 he brought the Oaktober initiative to Ventura County.   With a focus on connecting children to nature, one of David’s favourite things to do is plant trees with kids.
