Description

Join Green Gardening, our free earth-friendly gardening series that teaches Ojai residents how to grow healthier plants and environments. This particular workshop will feature our series instructor, Erin Harris, discussing an overview of soil preparation and regeneration.

The principles of regenerative gardening and agriculture are based on creating a healthy soil ecosystem. One of the basic tenets of gardening is to "Feed the soil and the soil will feed the plants.” To facilitate an environment for healthy plants that can be sustained from one season and one year to the next, you want to start by getting to know your soil and then taking whatever steps are needed to amend it for optimal growing conditions. This class will start by looking at the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil.

Note that If you purchase a high-quality organic garden soil or potting soil from the nursery that is formulated for flowers, vegetables and herbs, it will already be optimized to support your plants’ growth initially. However, edible gardens need a lot of nutrients from the soil, so we will discuss how to support and replenish those nutrients through regenerative methods, such as adding compost.
