OVGC presented "Fresh": Thinking in new ways about the food we eat!

Alternatives to the industrial food system are a hot topic these
days. The new film called Fresh, which came to Ojai on Saturday, January 30, celebrates thinkers, businesspeople, and farmers across America who are reinventing our food system. The film offers a practical vision of healthier, sustainable alternatives. It features, among others, Joel Salatin, made famous by Michael Pollen’s bestseller The Omnivore’s Dilemma. The film was sponsored by the health foods company Nutiva in cooperation with the Ojai Valley Green Coalition, and was shown at the Ojai Theatre, 145 E. Ojai Avenue, at 4:30 p.m. Admission was $10. A discussion followed the film, and all were welcome to participate.

The film showcases real people and connects the audience with not just facts and figures, but
personal stories of change. For instance, Joel Salatin has developed a rotational grazing system that not only allows the land to heal but also allows the animals to behave the way they were meant to, as in expressing their “chicken-ness or pig-ness,” as Salatin says.
Former professional basketball player Will Allen, who also appears in the film, is now one of
the most influential leaders of the food security and urban farming movement. His farm and not-for-profit organization, Growing Power, have trained others to start growing food sustainably,
and have provided a platform for people to share knowledge and form relationships in order to
develop alternatives to the industrial food system.

Those wishing further information about this film and the discussion can call the Ojai Valley Green Coalition at (805) 669-8445.
