Local E-Waste Recycling Event January 9, 2010

In partnership with the Ojai Valley Directory, Ojai Community Bank, and Gold Coast Recycling & Transfer, the Ojai Valley Green Coalition will once again hold an e-waste recycling event on Saturday, January 9, 2010, in the Ojai Community Bank’s parking lot, at 402 W. Ojai Avenue, from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M or until the truck fills up, rain or shine. Event flyer is HERE.

The event is open to all Ojai Valley residents and businesses, and will be the second of its kind to be held in Ojai. According to Deborah Pendrey, Executive Director of the Ojai Valley Green Coalition, last year’s e-waste recycling day was tremendously successful, and the January event is expected to bring an equally good community response.
Harrison Industries will be accepting for recycling most types of electronics, including computers, monitors, and all computer accessories as well as TVs, radios, stereos, and small appliances such as toasters and microwave ovens.
Along with the universal waste recycling, the Green Coalition will be extending the opportunity to recycle incandescent holiday lights, which it began collecting in November, and will also be accepting for recycling such additional items as household batteries (to a limit of five pounds per household), ink and toner cartridges, CDs and DVDs, iPods, cell phones, and incandescent holiday lights. The coalition collects these latter items year round at its monthly community events.
Those who receive new electronics or small appliances as holiday gifts should know that it’s illegal to dispose of their old items in the trash, or even in regular recycle bins. These universal wastes, as they’re called, contain toxic heavy metals that can leach into the ground and groundwater, so they cannot go to landfills.
