As long as water flows from the faucet, most Californians are unaware of the problems facing their own and six other states in the American Southwest, all of which rely heavily on water from the Colorado River. As populations grow in our cities, desert towns, and isolated rural communities, and as our region is challenged by ongoing drought, there is increasing pressure on our limited water supply.

Featuring aerial photography and high-quality graphics, the 71-minute documentary The American Southwest: Are We Running Dry? examines the water crisis and the need for conservation and watershed protection policies. The film will be shown by the Ojai Valley Green Coalition on Saturday, August 29, at 4:30 pm at the Ojai Theatre, for a $10 suggested donation. Besides the “big picture” of the growing humanitarian crisis around the world, it will convey to viewers the implications of diminishing water for our own community.
Veteran filmmaker Jim Thebaut wrote, produced, and directed the documentary. Originally released in 2005, the film is narrated by Emmy Award-winning actress Jane Seymour. Thebaut himself will be in Ojai to introduce the film and answer questions afterward.
