Bike Valet for Ojai Day

For this year’s annual Ojai Day on October 18, the Ojai Valley Green Coalition will offer attendees a free bike valet service. To reduce the number of cars descending on the downtown area as people arrive for the festivities, the OVGC Transportation Committee will set up the bike check service in the library parking lot. The coalition hopes to encourage attendees to benefit the environment by pedaling to the event, rather than driving.

The great block party known as Ojai Day attracts more local participants than any other event in the year. The valet bike parking service will be like a coat check for bicycles: bike riders will be issued a claim check for their bicycles, which will be guarded by members of the Coalition’s Transportation Committee in a secure “bike corral.” This means that bicycles—as well as accessories such as helmets—will be safe from damage or theft.

“We care about rider safety as well,” said OVGC Transportation Committee Chair Kenley Neufeld. “So if we see a potentially dangerous mechanical problem on a bike we valet, we’ll offer to fix it on the spot if we can, or at least alert the rider to the problem.”

Each person who bicycles rather than driving to Ojai Day will reduce carbon emissions in Ojai. “Our Transportation Committee is committed to encouraging more bike riding in Ojai,” said Neufeld. “So, along with the bike valet service, we plan to provide good, usable information about safe riding and bicycle care.”
